From the Press of Atlantic City, Wednesday, September 2, 2009-Eric Scott Campbell, Staff Writer
Mullica Township - A sword-wielding suicidal man kept a SWAT team at bay for an hour and a half Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Matthew Whalen, 25, was arrested about 6 p.m. outside a house on Pleasant Mills Road, next to the Mullica River. About 4:30, shortly after a companion called 911, officers arrived to find Whalen holding a three-foot-long martial-arts sword, Detective Sgt. John Thompson said.
Whalen was alone, speaking with township police, neighboring towns' officers in the Atlantic County Emergency Response Team and a standoff negotiator, threatening to commit suicide, Thompson said. At one point, he got in a canoe and began paddling away with the sword in his lap, then returned.
Whalen began threatening violence against the officers, getting close enough that they would have had to consider using deadly force, until a police dog subdued him enough to be arrested, Thompson said.
Charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and assault on a police canine joined the various weapons-related offenses Whalen faces. Thompson said he seized "10 different types of martial-arts weapons" from the house.
After a brief hospital treatment, Whalen was taken to the Atlantic County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

SCHOOL IS BACK MOTORIST USE CAUTION AND SLOW DOWN
For twenty three million students nationwide, the school day begins and ends with a trip on a school bus. The greatest risk is not riding the bus, but approaching or leaving the bus. Before children go back to school or start school for the first time, it is essential that adults and children know traffic safety rules.
Drivers
- When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school.
- When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, watch out for young people who may be thinking about getting to school, but may not be thinking of getting there safely.
- Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in neighborhood.
- Slow down. Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops.
- Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street with out looking for traffic.
- Learn and obey the school bus laws in your state. Learn the "flashing signal light system" that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions:
- Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
- Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate that the bus has stopped, and that children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.
Children
- Get to the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
- When the bus approaches, stand at least three giant steps (6 feet) away from the curb, and line up away from the street.
- Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says that it's okay before stepping onto the bus.
- If you have to cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road to a point at least five giant steps (10 feet) ahead of the bus before you cross. Be sure that the bus driver can see you, and you can see the bus driver.
- Use the handrails to avoids falls. When exiting the bus, be careful that clothing with drawstrings, and book bags with straps don't get caught in the handrails or doors.
- Never walk behind the bus.
- Walk at least three giant steps away from the side of the bus.
- If you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver. Never try to pick it up because the driver may not be able to see you.
Parents
- Teach children to follow these common sense practices to make school bus transportation safer.
FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS DRIVE DRUNK
The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Advertising Council's Innocent Victims public service campaign emphasizes the need to intervene and get the keys away from someone about to drive drunk. Here are some helpful tips and advice from focus group research on how people can get the keys away from a drunk driver.
| |
|
|
|
| |
|
| 1. |
If it is a close friend, try and use a soft, calm approach at first. Suggest to them that they've had too much to drink and it would be better if someone else drove or if they took a cab. |
| 2. |
Be calm. Joke about it. Make light of it. |
| 3. |
Try to make it sound like you are doing them a favor. |
| 4. |
If it is somebody you don't know well, speak to their friends and have them make an attempt to persuade them to hand over the keys. Usually they will listen. |
| 5. |
If it's a good friend, spouse, or significant other, tell them that if they insist on driving, you are not going with them. Suggest that you will call someone else for a ride, take a cab, or walk. |
| 6. |
Locate their keys while they are preoccupied and take them away. Most likely, they will think they've lost them and will be forced to find another mode of transportation. |
| 7. |
If possible, avoid embarrassing the person or being confrontational, particularly when dealing with men. This makes them appear vulnerable to alcohol and its effects. |

MULLICA POLICE ASSIST EHC PD ON A SHOOTING Published: Friday, March 07, 2008
EGG HARBOR CITY Police seek three suspects in shooting: A Mays Landing man was shot at least four times Wednesday night near the Philadelphia Village apartments, police said, and the county's Intelligence and Organized Crime Unit is aiding the search for three suspects.
Michael Jackson, 30, was treated at the Regional Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus in Atlantic City, Chief John McColgan said. He was shot twice in the arm, once in the chin and once in the buttocks, and early Thursday morning he was in "guarded" condition, McColgan said. The hospital had no information on Jackson on Thursday afternoon.
Police do not know what prompted the shooting at 9:49 p.m. An ambulance was summoned, but officers reaching the scene learned three men had fled into the woods and someone else had driven Jackson to ARMC's Mainland Campus in Galloway Township. Jackson was transferred to the City Campus soon thereafter, McColgan said.
No weapon was recovered, but McColgan said recovered shell casings seem to indicate a 9mm handgun. Police said they don't know whether Jackson is acquainted with the suspects.
"I don't think they were locals," McColgan said.
McColgan declined to elaborate about why an organized-crime officer from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office was involved in the investigation.
Witnesses are asked to call Egg Harbor City police at 609-965-2901.
