Police seek three suspects in shooting

A Mays Landing man was shot at least four times Wednesday night near the Philadelphia Village apartments, police said, and the county's Intelligence and Organized Crime Unit is aiding the search for three suspects.

Michael Jackson, 30, was treated at the Regional Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus in Atlantic City, Chief John McColgan said. He was shot twice in the arm, once in the chin and once in the buttocks, and early Thursday morning he was in "guarded" condition, McColgan said. The hospital had no information on Jackson on Thursday afternoon.

Police do not know what prompted the shooting at 9:49 p.m. An ambulance was summoned, but officers reaching the scene learned three men had fled into the woods and someone else had driven Jackson to ARMC's Mainland Campus in Galloway Township. Jackson was transferred to the City Campus soon thereafter, McColgan said.

No weapon was recovered, but McColgan said recovered shell casings seem to indicate a 9mm handgun. Police said they don't know whether Jackson is acquainted with the suspects.

"I don't think they were locals," McColgan said.

McColgan declined to elaborate about why an organized-crime officer from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office was involved in the investigation.

Witnesses are asked to call Egg Harbor City police at 609-965-2901.

Mullica committeeman wants gun-control debate
By ERIC SCOTT CAMPBELL Staff Writer, 609-272-7227
Published: Wednesday, February 13, 2008
MULLICA TOWNSHIP - Gun control resurfaced in public discussion here Tuesday night as a new Township Committee member unsuccessfully pushed for a citizen's panel to debate local gun regulations.

Democrat Bernard Graebener said he realized the inherent controversy, but he was just trying to give officers tools to curb improper use. Republican colleagues Janet Forman and Kathy Chasey disagreed with broaching the issue unless Graebener was confident he had a majority for approval.

"You're dragging the issue out, unless you're seriously considering local gun control," Chasey said.

Said Forman: "Before you get the town riled up, there's a lot of people who are very close to their firearms and don't think we have a problem."

Forman alluded to a "neighborly dispute" as having prompted the gun-control debate.

"Why don't you just approve dueling and let those guys go at it?" joked resident Greg Bowers.

Graebener and fellow new Democrat Michael St. Amour called gun control "a safety issue." Graebener cited his experience living in a previous community: "I had a neighbor shooting 50 feet from my house."

Graebener suggested that a citizen's committee, appointed by Mayor William Kennedy, could interview police officers about whether gun use causes problems in the township.

"I don't see the harm in (forming the committee), if they just make recommendations," St. Amour said.

Kennedy admitted to being "on the fence" and said he'd heard more opposition to gun control than support.

"Maybe we should look at it at a different time," Kennedy told Graebener.

One resident suggested putting a gun-control referendum on the November ballot. Forman was content to suggest postponing the discussion, and that motion got "yes" votes from everyone but Graebener.

The Township Committee also advanced a concession-building project by agreeing to seek at least a quarter of the first phase's funding from the Atlantic County Open Space Trust. The entire project would cost $302,000.

A slate of 4 percent or 7 percent raises for eight township employees passed with almost no discussion, as committee members mentioned that the raises were contractually required.

Mullica man gets 5 years in sex abuse of teen

Published: Saturday, February 9, 2008
MAYS LANDING - A Mullica Township man will serve five years in state prison after admitting to sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said.

Superior Court Judge Michael R. Connor sentenced Shawn Blaisdell, 35, late Thursday afternoon after he pleaded guilty to criminal restraint and criminal sexual contact stemming from a 2006 incident. Blaisdell is also required to register under Megan's Law and must have no contact with the victim, Housel said. He was sentenced with the consent of both parties, Housel said.

At Thursday's hearing, Blaisdell admitted that on Dec. 12, 2006, he prevented the victim from leaving the room, held her down and engaged in inappropriate sexual contact, Housel said. The victim is not being identified due to her age and the nature of the crime.

The victim's father spoke at the hearing, saying that his daughter and the entire family was devastated by Blaisdell's actions.

Blaisdell was arrested July 5 after DNA results came back from the State Police lab. He was charged with sexual assault, criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child, and was taken to the Atlantic County jail.

Mullica Twp Police Det James Gavin Led the initial investigation.
